Quality sales and Penneys 1969

The sales on Friday were quality sales, so Maureen, her mom and I had a great morning finding one great thing after the next. Maureen bought school supplies galore for her class room, and her mom scored a Pampered Chef deep dish, terracotta baking pan for a dollar! That was the find of the day.
What $33 bought on a Friday morning. I'm especially happy with the lightly used Cuisinart griddle. It replaces our over-used (not to mention greasy) griddle, which now resides in the garbage can awaiting collection tomorrow morning.

Asparagus pot to replace the less sturdy one that I picked up at a sale a few years ago.

Have no use for them, but could not resist these Crate and Barrel bowls, nor the Pyrex dish.

On Saturday, I went back for this picture...

...and I got suckered into buying this lot of Le Creuset cast iron cookware.

The sweetest thing I found this weekend is this plastic woven tote from JCPenneys. I paid $2 at an estate sale for it. It has the original price tag of $3.50 attached and inside was the credit card receipt: July 28, 1969. She bought it one week after Apollo 11's lunar module landed on the moon, and she never used it.

Got a nice Italian scarf made of the finest Italian polyester for a dollar at the same sale.

Longaberger and Franciscan

Maureen's purchases
A Longaberger child's basket.

There were not many sales last Friday. The best one was a ways out of town. Just as we were saying that we know nothing about value of items at garage sales, Maureen spotted a Longaberger basket and told me all about how popular they are back East. She paid fifty cents or a dollar. I found one that sold on E-Bay (without the liner) for $10.50-- well done, Maureen! I'll add them to my radar.
It's super cute.  Don't you think?

At the same sale, I found these retro dishes from the 60's and 70's. I especially like the ones on the right which are Taylor, Smith, & Taylor -- the Honey Gold pattern. The ones on the left are Franciscan, the Antigua pattern. I looked them up when I got home and found out that they are somewhat collectible. They were packed in 1992 newspapers, and you could almost hear them whisper "thank you" when I washed them by hand. Luckily, there was one shelf left in the garage that still needed filling...

My purchases
The candlesticks are silverplated. The miniature milk can is stainless steel. The fruit basket is probably from Target or so. But at 75 cents I think it's a nice addition to my kitchen.

Not pictured are a drinking fountain for the church cat, and a casserole dish. Total cost of the morning: $25

Because there weren't that many sales, we ended the morning at the Daue House, where Maureen found a nice side table that she was looking for.

All in all, a great morning. Oh, and we found nothing that had a Dutch connection. Not even remotely.
Three fruit bowls. The wired one is new. The blue one is from Holland from the 60's (not a garage sale find), We found the fluted Pyrex bowl last Sunday at an estate sale in Portland. They look sweet together.

German Retro Finds

I love all things German. Today, we found a few German "vintage" items at the last day of an estate sale in Multnomah Village, in Portland, Oregon. The nice thing about going to an estate sale on Sundays is that they are usually selling everything at half price. The bad thing is that the sale has been thoroughly picked over by shoppers who got there on Friday and Saturday. But none of those people cared for the three Hummel figurine shadowboxes we found. So kitschy that they become attractive. Nor did they buy the Bavarian children's place setting with fairy tale images: Gestiefelter Kater (Puss in Boots) and Hans im Gluck (no idea what the English title is). The shadowboxes have found a place in our bathroom. The dishes may go to our son's German teacher who is from Bavaria and would probably appreciate them even more than I do.

Wooden Tulips

Time spent: 9 a.m. to 12 noon
Grand total: $45
Garage sale buddy: Renee
Weather: gorgeous
Best buy: framed poster
Book: I Saw Esau with illustrations by Maurice Sendak
Dutch connection: yes, if you count wooden tulips, candlesticks marked "Delft," and a cheese slicer.

Renee and I had fun going to garage sales this morning. How couldn't it be fun? Good company (right, Renee???) Nice sales (if you don't count the crummy ones) and free drinks at Starbucks (they were giving away tall "Refreshers" from noon to 3). Renee's best find was a brand name teen jacket for $2 that still had the Macy's tags on it. Mine was a framed poster.

My framed poster. It's huge. Great find at $15

A variation on wooden shoes... wooden tulips! $3 for all, including the basket.
I love the image of a rooftop restaurant.

Holly Hobbie, cherries, and sunny weather

Time spent: 3 hours (9 a.m. to 12 noon)
Grand total: about $37
Buddy: Renee
Coffee Break: at Dutch Brothers
Dutch Connection: yes!
Best buy: Holly Hobbie doll in purse.

Found these Dutch clogs at the garage sale of a Mexican family... go figure! The cast iron casserole dish they are standing on is made in Belgium and well used, and will get used some more in our kitchen.
Renee brought me cherries from an orchard right by her house. They are delicious. Maybe she'll bring me more and I'll have to overcome my pie-dough anxiety and bake a cherry pie. Found this dish at an estate sale. As much as I love estate sales, I sure hope our kids will NOT have one after they have put us up in a nursing home. There's something very sad about them.

Holly Hobbie was popular in the late 70's in the Netherlands as well. When I was 12 or 13 years old, I had the full size version of this miniature doll. I believe she was bought at the MIRO, and I named her Dolly. I have to admit that, after all these years, I'm still a Holly Hobbie fan. The images are tender and sweet and celebrate the simple things in life. By the way, this may have been the best deal of the day: I bought the bag and the doll (she fits in the outside pocket) for fifty cents and found online that she trades between $25 and $30. She's going to live here for a while though.
